Multivisceral Transplant
Miami Transplant Institute has the largest multivisceral program in the U.S., led by Rodrigo Vianna, MD, the pioneering surgeon who invented multivisceral surgery for diffused thrombosis. The multivisceral transplant team specializes in high-risk, multi-organ transplants for patients with complex conditions like advanced tumors or portal vein thrombosis.
We’re also one of the few centers performing this surgery for both adults and children. The survival rate for our high-volume pediatric program is nearly 100 percent.
Our multivisceral transplant program continuously advances the future of transplantation and improves patient outcomes through research and innovative procedures. We’re one of the few centers nationwide using groundbreaking ex-vivo surgery in transplant/oncology, where a team of surgeons remove multiple abdominal organs from a deceased donor and treat them while outside the donor’s body (ex-vivo) before placing those same organs into a recipient. The complex ex-vivo surgery is necessary when tumors or other complications make it impossible to remove multiple abdominal organs from a deceased donor through traditional methods.
