As a leader in the use of ventricular assist devices (VADs), ECMO, and Impella, our heart transplant team provides expanded hope for patients, improving their quality of life as they wait for a transplant.
Medical breakthroughs such as the first combined heart/liver adult transplant in the U.S. and the first heart/lung/liver transplant, highlight the value of our comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach.
MTI advances the future of transplantation and improves patient outcomes by adopting new technology and participating in clinical trials. One such innovation is the Paragonix heart transport device, which preserves donor hearts more effectively to reduce post-transplant complications and expands eligibility for organs from greater distances.
The heart transplant team is also part of a study to develop a device that changes the size of the heart to stop the progression of heart disease. Together with the lung transplant program, they participate in clinical trials focused on expand options for patients with advanced heart failure. Other initiatives to minimize complications or hospitalization include less invasive monitoring of heart failure patients, and a cell-free DNA test that helps doctors monitor organ rejections, reducing the need for cardiac biopsies.

46-Year-Old’s Life Saved at Jackson Memorial Hospital After Deadly Heart Attack and Multi-Organ Failure
Daniel Jackson’s goal is to become a United States citizen. His American dream includes a career in telecommunications and cybersecurity, supporting his teenage daughter back home in Venezuela and eldest son in Houston, and prioritizing a healthy lifestyle.
That dream was nearly taken from him on June 7, 2025, when the 46-year-old suffered a nearly fatal heart attack at a gym.
